Op 27 januari 2024 is het boek 'Altijd op zoek naar een feestje' verschenen. Dit boek gaat over Juul. Toen zij 12 jaar oud was, kreeg zij de diagnose hersenstamkanker. Vier maanden na de diagnose overleed ze. Het boek vertelt het verhaal over die 4 maanden. Het gaat over Juuls kracht, humor, haar vriendschappen en de liefde voor haar broertje. Er waren ook mooie gesprekken over een toekomst waarvan Juul geen deel meer zou uitmaken. Toch wist zij mensen te inspireren. Het boek vertelt ook het verhaal van Juuls mamma, en haar leven na het verlies van haar dochter. Juul wordt zo gemist. Tijdens haar ziekte zei Juul dat dit verdriet ergens goed voor moest zijn. Dat was de reden dat zij meewerkte aan onderzoek naar nieuwe behandelmethoden. Zij wilde dat kinderen met hersenstamkanker een kans zouden krijgen. 

Met dit boek treden we in haar voetsporen. Door dit boek aan te schaffen ondersteunt u onderzoek naar behandelingen tegen hersenstamkanker door het Prinses Máxima Centrum in Utrecht. Daarnaast nemen we deze actiepagina mee op de reis die komen gaat nadat het boek is verschenen. We hopen mensen te stimuleren bij te dragen door te doneren via dit platform. Er is momenteel geen levensreddende behandeling tegen hersenstamkanker. Help ons Juul haar wens te vervullen door kinderen die dit lot treffen weer een kans te geven!

On 27 January 2024, the Dutch book ‘Altijd op zoek naar een feestje’ (‘Always looking for a party’) was published. I wrote this book together with the mother of our main character, 12-year old Julie. A few months after Julie turned 12, she was diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Gliomas (DIPG), or Brainstem Cancer, for which there is no cure.

This book tells the story of Julie, and how she inspired her friends and family with her perseverance and humour. Despite her fate, she made every day count. She also believed that one day she would come back (“Mum, don’t forget to write our home address on my arm”) in a healthy body. This story is also about Julies’ closest friendship and the love for her younger brother. Four months after Julie was diagnosed, she passed away.

The book also covers the hardship and challenges of a mother who lost her firstborn child. Feelings of failure and not knowing how to cope with losing a child, who you loved and looked after for such a short time, are part of this book that inspires, educates and motivates to organise your own party every single day. By reading this book, you will understand that even today Julie still inspires many people.

Brainstem cancer is a rare type of cancer that occurs most commonly in children. In the Netherlands, each year 10 children are diagnosed with brainstem cancer. In Europe, the number of children diagnosed is around 400. By purchasing this book, the reader supports research into treatment of brainstem cancer by the Princess Máxima Centre in Utrecht, the Netherlands.

The Princess Máxima Centre is a research hospital where children with any form of child cancer are treated. This makes this hospital the largest paediatric cancer centre in Europe with over 450 researchers and 900 healthcare professionals who work closely with Dutch and international hospitals on better treatments and new perspectives on cures.
